Persia's role in the history of magic is apparent in the word 'magic' itself. Ironically, the Magi became fierce enemies of what was technical 'magic' (called Jādū in Persian), after they turned to Zoroastrian religious preachers/performers. Magic, despite being demonised by religion before and after Islam, was still practiced in different ways and under different names. Dr. Ali Shapouran in his talk will discuss how the knowledge of supernatural power survived, evolved, and transformed during the medieval period in the Persianate world, and how it even influenced the very religions which wanted it terminated. He will also demonstrate some beliefs and traditions still practiced today which have magical roots.
Dr. Ali Shapouran is an internationally known researcher of medieval Persian history and literature. His current work focuses on the Persian epic, the Shanameh (The Book of Kings).
